The best places to see the sea in Trieste
In short
You don’t have to go far to see the sea in Trieste: the Molo Audace and Piazza Unità d’Italia are right in the centre and at sunset they are among the finest spots in the city. For views from above, climb San Giusto hill or, outside town, walk the Strada Napoleonica above Opicina; to actually enjoy the sea, head to Barcola and Miramare Castle. The gulf faces west, so the sun sets over the water, and on Bora days the air is so clear you can see for miles.
The sea in Trieste at a glance
Trieste was built facing the sea, and you can glimpse the gulf from almost every street corner in the centre. The best viewpoints fall into three groups: at sea level in the centre (Molo Audace, Piazza Unità, the waterfront, Porto Vecchio), from above (San Giusto, the Victory Lighthouse, the Strada Napoleonica) and along the coast (Barcola and Miramare).
The gulf faces west: the sun sets over the water, behind the Friulian coast or straight into the sea depending on the season. At dawn, by contrast, the sun rises behind the city, over the Karst, and lights the gulf with a soft, low light.
In the centre, at sea level
Molo Audace
The Molo Audace is a long stone pier that leaves the waterfront a few steps from Piazza Unità and runs straight out into the gulf. Walk to the end and you have the sea on three sides: to the right the port and Porto Vecchio, to the left the Sacchetta marina and the coast towards Muggia, and open water ahead.
This is where locals come for the sunset and for an after-dinner stroll. People sit on the iron bollards and watch the sun go down.
Tip: in a strong Bora the pier is very exposed and waves sometimes wash over it. On those days enjoy the view from the waterfront instead of walking out to the end.
Piazza Unità d’Italia
Piazza Unità d’Italia is enclosed on three sides by grand buildings from the late 19th and early 20th centuries and open on the fourth to the sea. From the middle of the square you look straight out over the gulf, which is exactly its magic: a vast room with the water as its fourth wall.
The best moment is the blue hour just after sunset, when the lights come on across the façades and the sea turns dark. It is about 12 minutes on foot from Casa Bora.
The waterfront and the Grand Canal
The “rive” are the city’s seafront: they run from the Grand Canal, past the Molo Audace and Piazza Unità, to the Stazione Marittima and the Sacchetta, a small marina sheltered by the old Lanterna lighthouse. Here the sea is within arm’s reach for kilometres, with moored boats and benches facing the gulf.
Halfway along, the Grand Canal opens onto the waterfront: from the bridge across it you see the church of Sant’Antonio Nuovo on one side and the sea on the other. Ferries to Muggia also leave from the waterfront near Piazza Unità; you’ll find them in our guide to day trips from Trieste.
Porto Vecchio
North of Trieste Centrale station lies Porto Vecchio, the great 19th-century Habsburg port, with rows of stone and brick warehouses lining the quays. It is a huge area that stood closed for years and is now being brought back to life: some restored buildings house exhibition spaces.
The sea feels different here, quieter and more industrial, with the view opening towards Barcola and Miramare. Part of the area is open to pedestrians and other sections are still under works, so follow the marked paths.

San Giusto hill
San Giusto hill is the ancient heart of the city, with the cathedral, Roman remains and the castle. From the square and above all from the walkways on the castle walls, which you can reach with a castle ticket, you see the rooftops of the old town, the port and the gulf all the way to the horizon.
It is a 20–25 minute uphill walk from the centre. The light is best in the late afternoon, when the sun warms the façades and the sea turns silver.
The Victory Lighthouse (Faro della Vittoria)
The Faro della Vittoria stands on Gretta hill, above the road to Barcola. It is a working lighthouse and also a memorial to those lost at sea in the First World War, about 70 metres tall and crowned by a statue of Winged Victory.
You can see it from almost everywhere in town. At certain times of year you can climb up to the viewing gallery; openings and arrangements change, so check the official website before you go.
Strada Napoleonica and Opicina
The widest view over the gulf is from the edge of the Karst. The Strada Napoleonica, a level path of about 5 km high above the city, starts at the Opicina Obelisk, where a viewpoint takes in the whole of Trieste. From up there you see the port, Miramare and, on clear days, the Istrian coast and the Grado lagoon.

Along the coast: the sea up close
Barcola
Barcola is the seafront where people from Trieste go to sunbathe and swim, with the “topolini” bathing platforms, a pine grove and a long promenade. It may be the best sunset spot in the city: the sun drops into the gulf, Miramare Castle sits to the right, and the Victory Lighthouse rises towards town.
From Casa Bora it is 10–15 minutes on bus line 6, or 35–40 minutes on foot along the waterfront. In October the Barcolana, the big sailing regatta, fills the gulf off Barcola with sails.
Miramare Castle
Miramare Castle sits on a headland rising straight out of the water, about 7 km from the centre. The park runs down to the sea and the castle terrace looks out over the gulf: from here you see Trieste from the side, in the distance, with the Karst behind it.
Late-afternoon light on the white castle is the classic Miramare view. Take line 6 to Grignano and walk a short way: 20–25 minutes in all.
